A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
